Princess Preschool

All kids learn differently and not all kids have the same desire and motivation to learn. My daughter didn't really have any interest in letters, numbers or colors. I tried my best to teach her but nothing caught her attention. After many failed attempts, I decided to create my own teaching method catered to my daughter. This method spotlighted all of her favorite princesses and we called it "Princess Preschool".

This method worked so well for my daughter and she knew her letters and colors in less than a month. I introduced a letter a day in a short 10 minute time frame. She hasn't been in a formal preschool before so I needed it to be short, educational and, most importantly, fun. Every letter is assigned to a princess or character from a popular TV show or movie. I focused primarily on letter recognition and colors. We loved this preschool so much that I am sharing it with you all today!

Preschool Outline:

1. Introduction. Start with watching the video provided in the link below. These are short 2-3 minute songs or scenes. Let them guess which princess or character you are learning about that day. This will help get them excited for what they are going to learn about.

2. Theme Color. Talk about the theme color associated with the character. Have them color the coloring page provided in the link below, focusing on the theme color. For example: Ariel's hair is red so we focused on only coloring her hair and writing in a red crayon for preschool that day.

3. Letter Connection. Using a blank sheet of paper, use that same crayon and write the letter of the day. Tell a story about the letter using the letter connection ideas I provided below. This will help them focus on the letter and remember it better. I realize that some of my connection ideas are quite a stretch, but the point is to tell a story that they will remember and can connect to the letter. For example: S is for Sofia the First and on one of my daughter's favorite episodes she has to take a princess test for school. The episode focused on how many obstacles were on the long path to the test, so the letter S represents the swirly, long path to the princess test.

4. Letter Recognition. On that same blank sheet of paper, write the letter of the day and another random letter of the alphabet. Have your child put a fun sticker on the letter of the day. This will help them recognize the letter. This is also a good time to review other letters you have learned. For example: A sticker is placed on the letter H, not the letter B. I would respond with "Good job, H for Hallie, the other letter is B for Belle." Simple, but little reminders are so helpful.

5. Show it Off. Decorate a piece of white paper with what you learned that day. Be sure to make the letter of the day big and noticeable at the top, then glue your coloring page on, glue pictures or stickers of the character on, stickers or tape in the theme color, and anything else you have. Make it fun.

6. Display. Use a binder or binder rings to organize and store all the letter pages. Make it a princess alphabet book that they can look at and read often. Create a fun cover page too!

The best piece of advice I have is to customize it to your child. Use characters they like and will be interested in. My second best piece of advice is to shop the Dollar Store. They have princess themed everything. I especially love their alphabet book. I bought it specifically to cut out all of the pictures to decorate pages. Also, they have tons of Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins stickers.
