DIY: $39 Walmart Desk Makeover Tutorial

I had been in the market for the perfect white desk for my computer. Since the office area is located in my dining room, I needed it to be small, long, have a drawer, and be sturdy enough for our computer. After weeks of searching online I couldn't find any for under $100 that fit all my criteria.

Then, as I was grocery shopping at Walmart one day I found this desk. It was the exact dimensions I wanted but it was black and I needed white. I hate buying new furniture with the intention of painting it but it was only $39 so I decided to give it a try.

Once the desk was put together, I sanded down as much of the black finish as I could, then started to paint. I used a can of semi-gloss white paint that I had. I always try to use what I have on hand first to save money. Spray paint would also work great on this desk.

It took a good 4 coats to completely cover the black. I let each coat dry for 24 hours (since I wasn't working with real wood) to let it completely dry and stick better. After the last coat I gave it 3 coats of Krylon acrylic clear gloss spray.

The last thing I used was a gold spray paint on the drawer pull that came with the desk. It was originally silver but I love gold, so I changed it.

I was so impressed with how this $39 Walmart desk turned out, especially since I was a little skeptical when it comes to boxed inexpensive furniture. But it is sturdy and exactly what I wanted. Love when that happens.

I completed my office area with a magnet board with all my favorite Instagram prints that you can find the tutorial for HERE. I also paired my desk with a closet unit that was given to us from some friends. A similar one can be found HERE. I switched out the original plastic white handles for some metal ones that I spray painted with the same gold as the desk pulls. My closet unit holds my printer, office supplies, fabric, and my kid's arts and crafts.
